Modern Family Recap: Hasta El Otoño, Baby

Modern Family's season two finale was entitled "See You Next Fall" because, of course, this is the last Pritchett family reunion for the rest of the summer. The episode started off weak, but gained some steam with a growing Spanish joke and some growing pains all around.
When the episode opens we discover that Alex, the Dunphy's middle child, is graduating from middle school and has to give a valedictorian speech. Really? Middle school valedictorians? They do that? Phil steps in to give Alex some pointers by reciting his high school Spanish Club campaign speech.
Meanwhile at the Pritchett house, Jay returns home from a visit to the dermatologist with one droopy eyelid. Manny thinks he may have had a stroke, but Jay confides to the camera that he let the doctor talk him into botox. Now he feels like a dumbass. Gloria is inclined to agree.
The Dunphys and the Pritchetts plan to carpool to Alex's graduation ceremony from Jay's house, but Jay's fancy gate gets stuck leaving the whole family trapped in Jay's backyard. Phil and Claire fear they'll miss Alex's speech, so they jump the fence and take off on a tandem bike. On the way there, the chain breaks on the bicycle and Claire starts to have a meltdown. Once again, Phil and his Spanish save the day.
In the end, everyone makes it to the graduation in time to hear Alex's speech. Alex decides to heed her sister Haley's advice and not tell off her entire class in hopes that she can make a fresh start in high school with an actual social life. Jay seems to have learned to accept the aging process rather than ever botox again. Haley begins a new, closer phase of her relationship with Claire and Phil as Alex begins her adolescent distancing. For some reason Cameron, Mitchell and Lily didn't have very big roles this week, but Cam did fall in a kiddie pool at the beginning of the episode only to learn that Mitchell has a penchant for physical comedy.
So that's the end of Modern Family for Season 2. Gloria and the gang will be back next fall, as the episode title suggests. Hopefully in Season 3 they'll step up the comedy game back to where it was in the first season. More Mitchell, more Cameron, and more Gloria and Manny, please!
